There is plenty to be excited about at William & Mary, where the Tribe returns four starters and eight of their top nine scorers from a year ago. W&M was a pair of two-point losses from closing the regular season on a six-game win streak and should be primed to improve on its 13-17 mark.
W&M features one of the league’s most dynamic players in junior guard Marcus Thornton, who tallied double figures in all 30 games last season and ranked second in the conference in scoring with 18.8 points per game. The second-team All-CAA pick also led the league and was among the top 20 nationally in 3-pointers made per game (3.1) and 3-point FG percentage (43.5%). Senior Brandon Britt joins him in the backcourt after ranking 13th in the CAA in scoring with 13.9 ppg while shooting an impressive 48.8% from the floor. Senior Julian Boatner (2.9 ppg) and sophomore Terry Tarpey (2.7 ppg) provide depth and experience in the backcourt and W&M is also expecting contributions from freshmen guards Omar Prewitt and Michael Schlotman.
The Tribe frontcourt is led by senior Tim Rusthoven, who was able to stay healthy last season and earned a spot on the All-CAA third team. The 6-foot-9 forward poured in 14.4 points per game while shooting a CAA-best 56% from the floor and was also ninth in the conference in rebounding (7.0 rpg). Senior forward Kyle Gaillard made a successful return from a knee injury and contributed 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Finding quality reserves in the post will be a priority for W&M and there are several candidates with experience. Senior Fred Heldring (1.0 ppg/1.7 ppg), junior Tom Schalk (0.8 ppg/1.3 rpg) and sophomore Sean Sheldon (0.5 ppg/0.8 rpg) will battle for time along with freshman Jack Whitman.
Did You Know: William & Mary led the CAA in field goal percentage (46.7%), 3-point FG percentage (37.4%) and 3-pointer made per game (7.4) last season. The Tribe shot 51.8% from the floor over their final 10 games and knocked down nearly 10 treys per game over the final nine contests.
