Notes Heading Into Postseason Play

Mar 19, 2013, 3:42 PM EDT

Three CAA teams open postseason play this week with James Madison facing LIU-Brooklyn in the First Four of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship (6:40 p.m./TruTV) on Wednesday, Northeastern traveling to Alabama for the first round of the NIT (9:00 p.m./ESPN2) on Tuesday and George Mason traveling to College of Charleston for the first round of the CBI (7:00 p.m./AXS.tv) on Tuesday.

Here are a few notes to get you ready:

CAA Success In the NCAA Tournament: The CAA has posted a 13-11 record in the NCAA Tournament since 2006, with two teams (George Mason – 2006, VCU – 2011) reaching the Final Four. Overall, CAA teams have a 28-37 record in the NCAA Tournament dating back to 1981 when the league was known as the ECAC South. CAA teams have won opening round NCAA Tournament games in five of the last seven years (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012), including the last three in a row.

Postseason Wins: CAA teams have combined to win 36 games in postseason play since 2006, including 13 victories in the NCAA Tournament. During that seven-year period, the CAA has had two teams reach the NCAA Final Four, one reach the semifinals of the NIT, and has had squads capture championships of the CBI and CIT.

JMU In The NCAA Tournament: James Madison is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance, but first since 1994. The Dukes are 3-4 all-time in the tournament, winning first-round games over Georgetown (61-55) in 1981, Ohio State (55-48) in 1982 and West Virginia (57-50) in 1983. JMU fell 64-62 to #3 Florida in the first round in 1994.

Northeastern In The NIT: Northeastern is making its third appearance in the NIT. The Huskies suffered first-round losses to Connecticut (59-57) in 2010 and Memphis (90-65) in 2005. NU is making its third postseason appearance in the last five years, having also played in the CBI in 2009. CAA teams are 16-32 overall in the NIT. The league’s most successful run came in 2006 when Old Dominion and Hofstra played each other in the quarterfinals with the Monarchs winning 61-55 to become the first CAA team to reach the NIT semifinals. Drexel also reached the quarterfinals last season before losing to Massachusetts.

George Mason In the CBI: George Mason is making its first appearance in the CBI, but this is the Patriots’ fifth postseason trip in the last six years and 12th overall. The CAA is 7-6 all-time in the five years of the CBI, with VCU winning the 2010 championship.
