Post-Season Awards Roll In For CAA Players

CAA men’s basketball players have received numerous post-season honors from various organizations.

Delaware junior guard Devon Saddler was the only CAA player selected to the USBWA All-District 2 team. Saddler led the CAA and ranked among the top 20 nationally in scoring this season with 19.9 points per game. The first-team All-CAA selection tallied double figures in the Blue Hens’ first 32 games and reached the 20-point mark 16 times. Saddler already ranks third on Delaware’s all-time scoring list with 1,670 points.

Towson junior forward Jerrelle Benimon and UNCW senior forward Keith Rendleman were among 25 players chosen to the Lou Henson All-America team by The squad honors the top mid-major players in the nation.

Benimon, the 2012-13 CAA Player of the Year, averaged 17.1 points per game and ranked third in the nation in rebounding with 11.2 per contest. He recorded double-doubles in 20 of his 31 contests. Benimon was also third in the CAA in blocked shots (1.9 bpg) and fourth in FG percentage (53.3%) and his 79 assists were the most of any Towson player. In addition, Benimon was named to the All-ECAC second team.

Rendleman, who was selected to the All-CAA first team for the second year in a row, ranked fifth in the CAA in scoring with 17.0 points per game and third in rebounding with 10.5 per outing. He posted double-doubles in 20 of the Seahawks’ 30 games and ranked third in the league in FG percentage (53.9%), fourth in steals (1.8 spg) and fifth in blocked shots (1.6 bpg). Rendleman is UNCW’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,055) and ranks sixth on the CAA’s career rebounding chart .

Ten CAA players were honored on the NABC All-District 10 squad. Named to the first team were Benimon, Rendleman, Saddler, Northeastern senior guard Joel Smith and William & Mary sophomore guard Marcus Thornton. Smith, a first-team All-CAA pick, ranked eighth in the CAA in scoring with 16.1 points per game and helped lead the Huskies to their first CAA regular-season title. The senior guard made a school-record 83 three-pointers while shooting 43% from beyond the arc and was the CAA’s top free throw shooter at 86.2%. Thornton, who was a second-team All-CAA selection, ranked second in the league in scoring with 18.8 points per game. He also led the CAA and ranked among national leaders in three-pointers (93) and 3-point FG percentage (43.5%).

Making the second team were Delaware senior forward Jamelle Hagins, Georgia State freshman guard R.J. Hunter, Drexel sophomore guard Damion Lee, James Madison senior guard Devon Moore and George Mason junior guard Sherrod Wright.

Hagins, a second-team All-CAA selection, averaged 11.6 ppg and ranked second in the conference in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and FG percentage (54.6%) and first in blocked shots (2.4 bpg). Hunter, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year and first-team All-CAA pick, ranked sixth in the league in scoring (17.0 ppg), fifth in steals (1.7 spg) and third in 3-pointers (73).

Lee, a second-team All-CAA honoree, was third in the conference in scoring with 17.1 ppg, second in FT percentage (82.9%) and fourth in 3-pointers per game (2.3 pg). Moore made the All-CAA third team after contributing 11.1 points per outing and leading the conference with 4.9 assists per game. Wright was a second-team All-CAA choice after ranking seventh in the league in scoring (16.7 ppg) and eight in field goal percentage (47.1%).
