Former CAA men’s basketball standouts Brett Blizzard of UNCW and Frank Elegar of Drexel will participate in the Basketball Alumni Legends League (The-Ball) showcase event for team North Carolina and Philadelphia, respectively, with numerous other collegiate alumni.
Team North Carolina squares off against team Washington, D.C., (the D.C. Dobermans) Aug. 1 at George Washington’s Charles E. Smith Center, with team Philly taking the court two days later on Aug. 5 — also versus D.C.
Blizzard enjoyed a standout career in Wilmington and helped lead the Seahawks to the NCAA Tournament in 2000, 2002 and 2003. UNCW’s all-time leading scorer with 2,144 points, Blizzard is the only basketball player in league history to earn first-team All-CAA honors all four years of his career and was the CAA Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003. Blizzard was a member of the prestigious CAA 25 Anniversary team and was also on the conference’s select Silver Stars list. He enjoyed a professional career in Italy after college.
Elegar, who was selected to team Philadelphia for the second straight year, led the Dragons in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots as a senior in 2007-08 and earned second-team All-CAA and first-team All-Defensive honors. He was also a second-team All-CAA honoree in 2006-07.
Other players with CAA ties taking part in the league include former VCU players Jamie Skeen, Bradford Burgess, Troy Daniels and Joey Rodriguez and ODU post player Frank Hassell for Team Virginia. Team D.C. features former George Mason post player Jai Lewis.
“It will be great to play against quality competition,” Blizzard said. “A lot of fans don’t have an opportunity to see their favorite players after leaving college. They’ll be able to see how they’ve developed in their careers.”
Those interested in watching the showcase starting on June 27, can tune into Comcast SportsNet and watch online via ESPN3.com.
