It shouldn’t take long for the College of Charleston to make an impact in its first year as a member of the CAA. The Cougars return four starters and several top reserves from last year’s 24-11 squad that advanced to the Southern Conference championship game and earned a postseason berth in the CBI.
Running the show for the Cougars will be junior point guard Anthony Stitt, who was the team’s second-leading scorer last with 11.0 ppg and dished out 109 assists. He knocked down 57 three-pointers a year ago and shot better than 40% from beyond the arc.
CofC also has a formidable presence in the post with 6-9 junior Adjehi Baru. He led the Southern Conference in rebounding (8.3 rpg) a year ago, blocked 44 shots and contributed 9.8 ppg while shooting better than 50% from the floor.
Rounding out the returning starters are senior small forward Anthony Thomas, who scored 8.5 ppg and is a versatile defender, and senior forward Willis Hall, who chipped in 7.7 ppg and was second on the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg).
Providing depth on the wings are senior Nori Johnson (4.5 ppg) and sophomore Theo Johnson (2.8 ppg), along with redshirt freshman Canyon Barry. Barry’s parents are NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry and Lynn Norenberg Barry, who scored more than 1,500 points in her career at William & Mary. True freshman Joe Chealey should see action as the Cougars’ backup point guard and 7-2 Tulsa transfer David Wishon will help CofC in the post.
The Cougars face a demanding non-conference schedule that includes a season-opening game at defending national champion Louisville and a home game against defending ACC champion Miami.
Did You Know: CofC head coach Doug Wojcik was the starting point guard for the Navy teams that won CAA titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987. Wojcik is the CAA‘s all-time leader in assists with 714 and was selected as a member of the CAA’s 25th Anniversary team. On the receiving end of many of those assists was center David Robinson, who was a National Player of the Year and the #1 overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft.
