After a great first day in Boston on Friday, the #CAAHoops On Campus team finally arrived at the Historic Matthews Arena for today’s matchup between Northeastern and Delaware. Saturday’s regionally televised contest (Comcast SportsNet) should be a good one, as the Blue Hens lead the all-time series, 23-19, but the Huskies own a 12-4 mark in league play.
The CAA.TV staff will be visiting all nine campuses over the next two months to provide in-depth features, post-game press conferences, highlights and much more. For a glimpse of what our team will create take a look at back our William & Mary coverage last weekend right here on the blog. You can also checkout our features on Tim Rusthoven and Kyla Kerstetter, posted yesterday and earlier today.
You can follow our coverage of today’s game in Bean Town as well as the other two #CAAHoops contests (UNCW/Drexel and James Madison/William & Mary) in a number of ways. We’ll post a few notes here on the blog in addition to postgame highlights and postgame comments after the game. We’ll use the @CAABasketball timeline on Twitter to provide updates from around the league. You can also follow the #CAAHoops hashtag as we know several of fans and media throughout the league will provide superb commentary. Lastly don’t forget to take a look at both our Facebook page and Instagram feed for inside looks at the Northeastern/Delaware contest.
Be sure to watch for our features with Huskies’ women’s basketball assistant coach Tom Blake next Tuesday and Northeastern men’s basketball’s special connection with Team IMPACT! next Wednesday.
FINAL: Delaware 74, Northeastern 70. Baptiste had double-double with 19 points (9-of-9 shooting) 11 boards, Saddler had 22 and Usher had 17 in the win. #CAAHoops ‘Hens are 4-0 in CAA, Huskies fall to 2-3.
Less then on minute left to play: Just when it looked over for Northeastern, Walker made a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to make it a one-point game. Saddler missed front end of a 1-and-1 which led to the three-ball. On the other end, Usher missed a free throw, then Stahl followed with a bucket to make it 69-68. ** Update – Now 72-70 after Usher made up for missed free throw with two more. Northeastern was at the line attempting one free throw with 1.4 to play, but violation squandered the attempt.
1:12 left in second half: Kyle Anderson might have very well just clinched a tough road win for the Blue Hens. He hit an NBA-range 3-pointer with 1:20 left to extend the visitors’ lead to 68-61. On the other end before the three, the Huskies settled for their own 3-point attempt, but the shot missed.
4:00 left in second half: Shot-clock malfunction left the game in a dead period for about 10 minutes, finally back underway.
4-plus left in the second half: Saddler of Delaware made big 3-pointer to make it 61-58 in favor of the ‘Hens, but one minute later, Northeastern’s Zach Stahl has a steal-and-score play that knots the game at 61-61 with 4:00 to play.
7:56 left in second half: Things are heating up in Boston, as the Blue Hens just took a 57-55 lead as Kyle Anderson drained his first 3-pointer of the game. NU’s Walker and Eatherton have 11 and 15 points, respectively. Both have played solid in second half offensively. Also of note, UD’s Carl Baptiste has 18 points on 9-of-9 shooting from floor.
12:42 left in second half: The Huskies have suddenly fallen behind, as UD’s Usher has been lights out from behind the arc. Back-to-back treys gave the Hens a 46-41 lead. Reggie Spencer responded for the Huskies on the other end, though, with a tough bucket to stop the bleeding briefly.
16:35 left in the second half: UD opened up the second frame scoring the first four points, and after two King-Davis free throws, the Blue Hens cut the deficit to 36-35.
Halftime: #GoNU 30, #BlueHens 27 – Usher started to be much more aggressive as half came to a close. His lengthy layup with less than three seconds to play made it 30-27. The hosts lead, but UD arguably has the momentum heading into the second half.
5:40 left in first half: Please, someone, notify ESPN because Davon Usher just had a #SCTop10 worthy one-handed slam to give the Blue Hens a 23-21 lead.
8:03 left in first half: Northeastern’s Reggie Spencer just knocked down two free throws to bring the hosts back within one, 19-18 here just past the midway point of the first half. Devon Saddler and Spencer got a little chippy in the paint which drew the foul. Huskies (2-2) probably realize just how critical this game is for them.
13:39 left in first half: Both teams started the game off trying to establish the low-post. Eatherton accounted for Northeastern’s first four points, while Baptiste battled in the paint to notch eight quick points. 12-5, Blue Hens lead.
Pregame: Northeastern and Delaware will meet for the 43rd time in series history on Saturday. Delaware holds a slight 23-19 edge in the all-time series, but the Huskies are 12-4 against the Blue Hens in CAA regular-season play. UD has jumped out to an impressive 3-0 mark in CAA play, while NU finds itself with a 2-2 record.
